Lydia Steele, CDP

Sister Lydia Steele, formerly Sister Mary Philip, entered religious life from Most Blessed Sacrament parish in Quincy, Ma. She credits her family and the teachers who taught her in elementary school with influencing her decision to become a Sister.

She earned a bachelor of science degree and a master’s in education from Bridgewater State University and a master’s in education from Boston University. An educator her entire ministry, Sister Lydia taught at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Kingston, Ma. (1966–70), St. Bridget’s in Abington, Ma. (1970–73), and St. Francis Xavier in Weymouth, Ma. (1973–74). In 1974, she returned to Sacred Heart Elementary, where she has been ever since: special education (1974–90), financial administrator (1990–2013), and at present, she is assistant principal.

Reflecting on her life as a religious, Sister Lydia finds that working with children has been the most rewarding, especially the time she spent in special education. She is passionate about education and Sacred Heart Elementary and the Early Childhood Center.

In her spare time, Sister Lydia enjoys bike riding, walks in the woods, hiking in the mountains, and simply enjoying her friends.
